Windows 98 Driver Requirements for USB 2.0

*Silicon Mountain no longer offers support for use of our USB flash drives under Windows 98. All support is reserved for USB enabled systems with at least Windows ME or Mac OS 9.1.

One of two different driver versions is required to successfully install the USB 2.0 Drives in Windows 98® based systems. To determine which driver is required you need to:

  1. Figure out for which driver version your specific USB drive is configured
  2. Download the appropriate driver.

Step 1

Drive is Recognized but Inaccessible

If the drive is recognized by the system but inaccessible, double click on the USB icon to determine which Flash Drive version you have. You will see AL, SM, UT, or CBM and a brief USB 2.0 description.

Drive is Not Recognized

If the drive is not recognized at all, you will need to access a Windows 2000® or newer based system to ID the driver requirement for your drive. Windows 2000® and Windows XP® based systems already contain the required drivers for all USB 2.0 based products. Double click on the unplug or eject hardware icon (in the system tray) to determine which Flash Drive version you have. You will see AL, SM, UT, or CBM and a brief USB 2.0 description.
